Body:
Mayor Fenty, DC Council Members, and the DC Taxicab Commission: Thank you for listening to DC's residents and taking into account the thousands of public comments urging the Mayor to institute reasonable taxi rates for the new time and distance meters. The process was transparent and open, and the new proposal takes into account both the needs of DC residents to have a safe and affordable taxi system available, and the needs of taxi drivers to earn a fair and decent wage. This new proposal brings DC's proposed taxi cab fares in line with those of other major cities throughout the country. I support the changes to implement a lower base fare and eliminate the additional passenger and rush hour surcharges. There was no rational argument for DC having exorbitantly higher fares than the rest of the country, especially considering the extremely low cost of operating a taxi cab in the District. I also want to re-iterate my support for only time and distance meters. I strongly oppose any efforts by the Council to introduce legislation for hybrid zone meters that may institutionalize an archaic and confusing zone system at the expense of the public. Thank you again for your leadership in eliminating all forms of the zone system and your efforts in transforming DC into a world-class city. I look forward to riding in a reasonably priced time and distance metered taxi on April 6!
